It's Summer!

I’m done with all my exams and papers, which is such a relief. I will write up a summary of how I felt about my classes soon. I’m back at home in California, and I have started my internship at Intel. This summer looks to be a very productive one with my internship and then figuring out what I want to do with the rest of my time at MIT. Right now I’m just enjoying the sunny day and doing some random chores, along with some much needed relaxing. Gus is already in France, and he will be starting his internship with Schlumberger within the next few days. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer.

hey Amber...I just ran into this thread and I have a quick question: do you get info these internships from MIT advising itself or did u just apply to it from a website. I'm just really worried that I'll fall behind at MIT next year b/c quite frankly I don't have any experience with research/internship wise. How would you go about getting research experience freshman year if you've never done it before? I mean do I just become some prof's lab rat or something or due I have to approach the prof with some original idea in mind...lol as you can tell I'm just really worried

Hi!

I actually didn't get the internship from MIT. I applied online at the Intel website, but the best way is to actually get an internship is to try and find someone who works at Intel and ask them for help. I know others who just applied and got in, but it is much more difficult this way. Luckily, I had some contacts there from my science fair experiences, and they helped me out. You don't need contacts to get an internship though.

Doing research at MIT is very easy, at least from what I've heard. I have yet to get involved in a UROP (research position Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) yet, but I think I will next year. Many of my friends had them, even as freshman. You should have no trouble getting one, even if you don't have any experience. What you do in the research depends upon the lab and the professor. I've heard of good UROPs where students actually contribute and others where the student washes beakers. If you do some background research you should be able to find a good one. A lot of people get UROPs over the summer instead of internships because it is easier.

I've heard of cases where you can do your own research if you have an original idea, but most of the time students just go into a lab group and work on what the professor is doing, although they might have their own project that ties in.

You shouldn't worry at all about being behind! Most people do not have research experience at all! Many of my friends are going to be juniors and they haven't had any sort of internship yet, except a UROP. MIT can help you find an internship, I just did it by myself though. There are career fairs and other opportunities to find companies offering internships.

I hope that helps and good luck next year at MIT! If you have any more questions feel free to ask me. I don't get many comments on this blog and I enjoy helping others.
